Travis was flying in a private Learjet plane from Columbia, South Carolina, to Los Angeles with his assistant, Chris Baker, security guard, Charles “Che” Still, and best friend, Adam “DJ AM” Goldstein.

The plane ended up suffering an emergency during take-off, and Chris and Che both died in the crash alongside both of the plane’s pilots, James Bland and Sarah Lemmon.

DJ AM survived the crash, but died a year later. 

Over the years, Travis has spoken at length about the trauma of the incident, revealing that his “whole body lit up” after he accidentally jumped into the jet while trying to escape the plane from the emergency exit door. 

He ended up being hospitalized for 11 weeks and underwent 27 separate surgeries and skin grafts after suffering third-degree burns on 65% of his body.
