Well, hello Facebook marketing and crowd sourcing. These got me into my very first set of earbuds. Yes, I’m a latecomer to this ubiquitous accessory that now connects me more intimately with the digital world. Why did it take so long? Am I a Luddite?

While my life is hardly dominated by electronics, I have gradually given in to a number of devices which are now pretty well integrated into my life. Having spent my adolescent years at a time when electronic calculators had first been introduced and personal computers were yet many years into the future, my electronics were limited to a television, a VCR, a cassette deck, a turntable, and a stereo receiver (I could not afford Quadraphonic technology).

But this essay is not just a history of my relationship to technology (not terribly interesting actually). Rather it is the mini love affair I’m having with these lovely earbuds (we used to call them earphones but what’s in a name, right)?

I have seen the proliferation of earbuds wearing folks for some time now and, when I saw that Facebook ad one day, I decided I was ready. So I ordered them via the posted link and they arrived shortly thereafter.

I’m no expert with audio electronics but I think I know good sound when I hear it. And these beautifully designed crowd funded earbuds delivered incredibly good sound including really dramatic bass response.

The only problem I can report here is the lack of a tether so that, if one bud leaves an ear, it can easily be located. Various such products are available but none that I’ve so far tried have been truly satisfactory. That said, I have stopped using these if I am likely to fall asleep and lose one or both earbuds. And they give me great joy when listening/watching music and other videos on my iPad after lights out. I can listen to my heart’s content without disturbing my partner or our dogs (who found those buds to be potential chew toys).

I do also own a set of Sennheiser 400 HD Pro Headphones which I tend to use when listening to sound editing tasks on my laptop or listening to actual CDs on my little boombox. But these new earbuds are now a part of my treasured audio electronics. I highly recommend them.
